The Quick Summary
FreeTTS is a free text to speech tool. You can use it to convert text into audio. The audio you generate is yours to use. Don't abuse the service. Don't try to break it. Don't use it for anything illegal. Be a decent human being. That covers about 90% of these terms.
For the remaining 10%, keep reading.
1. Acceptance of Terms
By using FreeTTS (freetts.org), you agree to these terms of service. If you don't agree with something here, you probably shouldn't use the service. We're not going to hunt you down or anything, but legally speaking, using the site means you're cool with these rules.
2. What FreeTTS Is
FreeTTS is a free online text to speech tool that converts written text into spoken audio using AI neural voices. The service is provided "as is" and "as available." We do our best to keep it running smoothly 24/7, but we can't guarantee 100% uptime. Servers need updates, things break sometimes, and the internet is a wild place. If the site goes down temporarily, we'll get it back up as quickly as possible.
3. Using the Service
You can use FreeTTS for any lawful purpose. That includes personal projects, commercial projects, educational content, accessibility needs, content creation, language learning, and pretty much anything else that isn't illegal or harmful.
Things you CAN do:
- Convert text to speech for YouTube videos, podcasts, and social media content
- Create voiceovers for presentations, e-learning courses, and training materials
- Use generated audio in commercial projects and products
- Generate audio for accessibility purposes
- Use the tool for language learning and pronunciation practice
- Create audio for apps, games, and software projects
- Generate audio for personal use, study, and entertainment
Things you CANNOT do:
- Use the service to generate audio that impersonates real people without their consent
- Create deepfake audio intended to deceive, defraud, or mislead
- Generate hate speech, threats, or content that promotes violence
- Use the service to spam, harass, or abuse others
- Attempt to overload, hack, or disrupt the service
- Use automated scripts to mass generate audio in a way that degrades the service for other users
- Resell access to the FreeTTS service itself (you can sell content you create with it, you just can't wrap our tool and charge people to use it)
- Use the service to generate audio for illegal activities
This list is common sense stuff. We're not trying to restrict legitimate use. We just want to make sure nobody ruins the service for everyone else.
4. Audio Output and Ownership
The audio files you generate using FreeTTS are yours to use. You can download them, edit them, include them in your projects, and publish them commercially. You don't need to credit FreeTTS (though we certainly wouldn't mind if you did).
That said, the underlying voice technology and AI models are not yours. You're licensing the output, not the technology. You can use the audio freely, but you can't claim to own the voice model itself or reverse engineer our service.
5. Content Responsibility
You're responsible for the text you input into FreeTTS and how you use the resulting audio. If you type something that's copyrighted, defamatory, or illegal and then convert it to speech, that's on you. FreeTTS is a tool. What you do with it is your responsibility, just like a word processor isn't responsible for what you write in it.
6. Service Limits
FreeTTS currently has the following limits:
- 5,000 characters per generation: You can convert up to 5,000 characters of text per request. For longer texts, split them into multiple generations.
- No daily limit: There's no cap on how many times you can use the service per day.
- Fair use: While there's no hard daily limit, we reserve the right to temporarily restrict access if a single user is consuming an unreasonable amount of resources (like running automated scripts that generate thousands of audio files per hour). Normal human use will never hit this threshold.
We may adjust these limits in the future if needed to keep the service sustainable. If we do, we'll communicate any changes clearly.
7. Privacy
Your privacy matters to us. The short version: we don't collect personal data, we don't store your text, and we don't track you. For the full details, please read our Privacy Policy.
8. Disclaimer of Warranties
FreeTTS is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, either express or implied. We make no guarantees about:
- The accuracy of pronunciation for every word in every language
- Uninterrupted availability of the service
- The suitability of the audio for any specific purpose
- The service being completely free of bugs or errors
We try really hard to make everything work perfectly. But text to speech is complex, languages are quirky, and sometimes a voice will mispronounce a word or add a weird pause. If you notice consistent issues, let us know at [email protected] and we'll look into it.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, FreeTTS and its operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service. This includes (but isn't limited to) damages for loss of profits, data, or other intangible losses.
In plain English: if your podcast episode flops because the AI voice mispronounced "quinoa," we feel bad for you, but we're not financially responsible for that.
10. Changes to These Terms
We may update these terms from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll try to give notice on the website. Continued use of FreeTTS after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
We're not going to suddenly add a clause that says "we own your firstborn." Any changes will be reasonable, fair, and in keeping with the spirit of what FreeTTS is: a free tool that treats its users with respect.
11. Termination
We reserve the right to block access to the service for users who violate these terms, particularly those engaging in abuse, illegal activity, or actions that degrade the service for others. Since FreeTTS doesn't require accounts, "termination" would typically mean blocking an IP address or range.
If you think you've been blocked unfairly, email us at [email protected] and we'll sort it out.
12. Governing Law
These terms are governed by applicable laws. Any disputes arising from the use of FreeTTS shall be resolved through good faith discussion first. If we can't work it out over email like reasonable people, then formal legal channels can be pursued as a last resort.
13. Intellectual Property
Let's get clear on what belongs to whom:
- Your content: The text you input is yours. The audio output generated from your text is yours to use as described in section 4. You retain all rights to the creative content you create using FreeTTS as a tool.
- Our service: The FreeTTS website, its design, code, branding, and the underlying technology belong to FreeTTS. You can't copy the website, clone the service, or scrape our interface to build a competing product. Using the tool doesn't grant you rights to the tool itself.
- Voice models: The neural voice models used by FreeTTS are provided by third party technology providers. You receive a license to use the audio output, not the model itself. You can't extract, download, reverse engineer, or redistribute the voice models.
- Trademarks: "FreeTTS" and our logo are our trademarks. You can mention FreeTTS by name (we'd love that, actually) but you can't use our branding in a way that implies endorsement or affiliation unless we've agreed to it in writing.
14. API and Automated Access
FreeTTS is designed for human use through a web browser. Automated access (bots, scripts, API scraping) is not permitted without prior written permission. If you're a developer interested in integrating text to speech into your application, email us at [email protected] and we'll discuss options.
Why the restriction? Because one person running a script that generates 50,000 audio files per hour would ruin the experience for everyone else. The service is free for humans. Robots need to ask first.
That said, if you're building something cool and want to use our service, we're genuinely open to talking about it. We just need to make sure it doesn't tank the server for everyone else.
15. Third Party Voice Technology
The voices available on FreeTTS are powered by third party neural voice technology. This means:
- Voice availability may change if the underlying provider modifies their offerings. A voice that exists today might be retired tomorrow. This is rare, but it can happen.
- Voice quality and behavior are determined by the voice models, which we don't control at the model level. If a voice mispronounces a word consistently, it's a model limitation, not something we can hotfix.
- New voices may be added over time as providers release them. We regularly update our voice catalog to include new options.
We choose voice providers carefully and prioritize quality, language coverage, and reliability. But ultimately, the voices are someone else's technology that we make accessible to you for free.
16. Indemnification
You agree to hold FreeTTS harmless from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the service or your violation of these terms. Translation: if you use FreeTTS to create audio for something illegal or harmful and someone comes after us because of it, we're going to point them in your direction. Don't use the tool for bad things and this clause will never apply to you.
17. Accessibility Commitment
FreeTTS is committed to being accessible to all users, including those with disabilities. The tool itself is designed to help people with visual impairments and reading difficulties access written content through audio. We strive to make the website itself accessible as well, following WCAG 2.1 guidelines where possible.
If you encounter accessibility barriers on our website, please let us know at [email protected]. We take accessibility seriously because it's literally the core purpose of text to speech technology. A TTS tool that isn't accessible would be the height of irony.
18. Service Modifications
We may modify, update, or discontinue features of FreeTTS at any time. We might add new voices, remove underperforming ones, change the interface, adjust limits, or add new capabilities. We'll try to communicate significant changes, but we reserve the right to evolve the product as we see fit.
What we won't do: we won't suddenly turn a free service into a paid one without providing ample notice and explanation. The "free" part of FreeTTS isn't a temporary marketing strategy. It's a foundational principle.
19. Severability
If any part of these terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid by a court, that specific part gets removed and the rest of the terms continue to apply. We're not trying to sneak anything past you. If a clause doesn't hold up legally, we'd rather remove it than fight about it.
20. Entire Agreement
These terms, together with our Privacy Policy, constitute the entire agreement between you and FreeTTS regarding your use of the service. No prior conversations, emails, or implied understandings supersede what's written here. If it's not in this document or the privacy policy, it's not part of the deal.
21. Contact

We're open to feedback on everything, including the legal stuff. If something in here doesn't make sense or seems unreasonable, tell us. We'd rather fix it than have users confused or uncomfortable.
